O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. Judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was given high marks from the judges. But she was a victim of massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was in the bottom three, followed by the bottom two. The judges were astonished by the outcome and urged fans to vote for singers with impressive singing skills such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the bottom three once in the future. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it to the top two spots in the finals of the competition, Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a phone call shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
