Annette Funicello's dancing partner was discovered at Fullerton California by Walt Disney at just thirteen years old. Funicello was not a candidate in the Mickey Mouse Club and joined in the latter half of the season of the series, much to the displeasure from their Mickey Mouse Club peers. Disney was right to make the decision as Funicello soon became the major character on The Mickey Mouse Club. She also had her own adventure story entitled Adventures in Dairyland. Funicello's potential as a teenage celebrity was realized quickly. Disney hired Tutti Camerata, a well-established arranger, to aid her with her recording career. Annette, however, wasn't too enthusiastic about Funicello singing. Funicello eventually became accustomed to recording and enjoyed the time she spent together with Camerata who was one of the rare arrangers of their 40s who knew the basics of early rock. Annette Sings Anka was the third record, possibly one of the first albums to feature the music of rock singers in the set list of songs. Funicello played on Beach Party the first of five movies about beach parties. Usually co-starring Frankie Avalon although produced by AIP, the scripts of all of them was personally read and approved by Walt Disney in order to protect Annette's squeaky-clean image. Funicello's films were instrumental in breaking the mold of other artists. Stevie Wonder starred in Muscle Beach Party.
